March 2nd 🎉Dr. Seuss's 🎂Birthday 📚

Happy 🎂Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Today, we are celebrating Dr. Seuss’ 🎉 Birthday by reading his books and assembling Green Eggs and Ham puzzle! "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go," said Dr. Seuss. Although no longer with us, he had left us a wonderful legacy, which continues to live on through the pages of his books.

“If you never did, you should. These things are fun, and fun is good.” ~ Dr. Seuss.

I encourage my children to get out there and try new things, and this phrase reminds us that fun things are out there waiting for us if we just seek them out! "Fun is good" ~ leading to happy feelings; and happiness, in turn, is a key to having success in life. Explore ~ Have Fun ~ Be Happy ~ Be Successful! As simple as that!

Today, Adrian assembled Green Eggs and Ham puzzle for the first time (buy here). The puzzle has 48 pieces, and it was challenging, so Adrian had to keep referring to the "control" picture on the box (which he usually does not do). While piecing together favorite characters from Green Eggs and Ham, Adrian was learning rhymes, while practicing fine motor skills. Puzzles develop concentration, cognitive and critical reasoning, and most importantly, puzzles are fun! (For more on puzzles, read here a post about National Puzzle Day.)

We have a humble Dr. Seuss 📚book collection, and we are planning on keep expanding it. We have not read one book we did not like! Cat in the Hat's Learning Library offers a wide variety of books: from fun light reading to educational books which focus on a particular subject such as a human body, dinosaurs, or solar system to name a few. Below are some of the books we have been enjoying reading:

  • Fine Feathered Friends: All About Birds (buy here),
  • Oh Say Can You Say Di-no-saur? All About Dinosaurs (buy here),
  • The Cat in the Hat (buy here),
  • The Foot Book (buy here),
  • The Big Green Book of Beginner Books (buy here),
  • Why Oh Why are Deserts Dry?: All About Deserts (buy here),
  • Ten Apples Up on Top! (buy here),
  • One Cent, Two Cents, Old Cent, New Cent: All About Money (buy here).

DSC_0001 TIP: on March 1st, which is a Read Across America Day, Dr. Seuss's books go on sale at Target!

Dr. Seuss's beginner books encourage children to read all by themselves with simple words and illustrations which give clues to their meaning. Although Adrian cannot read these books by himself yet, he likes to shout out the words he remembers or figures out by means of clues and pictures. He also enjoys when Julia reads to him ~ Dr. Seuss's books are always his first choice!

DSC_0001Adrian picked as his favorite Ten Apples Up on Top! book (buy here).

This is the silliest books I have seen which teaches a child so much: ~ math, counting, vocabulary! In this beginner book by Dr. Seuss, three friends balance while counting: when a lion, a dog, and a tiger meet up, they soon discover that they can each do different things while balancing apples on their heads. Whether drinking milk, jumping rope, or roller-skating, they can do a lot with ten apples up on top! Seuss’s apple-balancing characters through silly rhymes will encourage your child reading, counting, and, of course, giggling! We enjoyed so much reading Dr. Seuss's books while using our imagination and being silly!

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose."
